Check your Feelings - Are you hungry or have an appetite?
5 signs & 1 test on how to tell hunger from appetite
Hey OFFSET babe! You know those days when you could eat anything you find? Today we're going to take a look at the real difference between hunger and appetite and how you can tell if you're really hungry or just at the mercy of an appetite attack.
Sign no. 1: I want it NOW
Appetite is actually only created in your head by an appetite trigger. This could be boredom, advertising, images, smells, stress, sadness or even PMS. A typical scenario for an appetite attack is, for example, a craving for a chocolate bar that you have just seen in an advertisement.
Sign no. 2: No greens
You're hungry for something special or unhealthy - you wouldn't eat healthy snacks like cucumbers or carrots right now.
Sign no. 3: Ouch
You feel hunger more physically. It usually comes from within and not from the head. You feel an unpleasant sensation that is almost painful.
Sign no. 4: I take it all
You don't care what you have in the house. You just eat what's there. Even if it's stale, dry bread.
Sign no. 5: It takes time
The feeling of hunger usually occurs 4 - 6 hours after the last meal. If you've eaten your fill, you won't feel hungry again an hour later. After all, your body also needs time to process the food you have eaten.
Still not sure? Take the test!
Drink a full glass of water and then ask yourself the question:
Would I eat vegetable soup right now?
If you can answer YES to this question, then you are really hungry and should start preparing a meal. For example, a Pretty Little Meal or a mixed meal, which can also be a vegetable soup.
If you can say no, you have been hit by an appetite trigger. Move somewhere else, for example, get some fresh air or distract yourself in another way. You can also use the Little Helper to bridge the time until your next meal.
Once you've done this a few times, you'll feel the difference over time, understand and learn what is real hunger and what is just appetite.
